The traditional mountain village of Mesanagros is located in the southern part of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 83 km from the capital city. The village and its surroundings give a very deserted impression.
Mesanagros is a tiny village hidden in the mountainous landscape of the south of Rhodes, about 8 km northwest of the quiet seaside resort of Lachania. Historically, Mesanagros is a very old village which, thanks to its location, has survived many pirate raids.
The village consists of narrow streets, traditional village houses (some long abandoned and dilapidated) and a nice little square with the only local cafe (Kafenion O Mike). The symbol of the village is the 13th-century church of Kimissis Theotokou (Assumption of Virgin Mary), interesting among other things because it was built on the site of a much older early Christian basilica from the 6th century. The temple, along with the surrounding site, is fenced off, but if you want to look inside, the owner of the local cafe will be happy to lend you a key. The village also has a younger church Mesanagros with a bell tower.
The area around Mesanagros is very rich in the remains of various early Christian churches and monasteries. The church of St. Irene Chrysovalantou stands in front of the entrance to the village and the monastery of St. Thomas (a 14th century Byzantine monastery built on the ruins of an older Christian monastery) is also interesting. About 5 km west of the village is the beautiful and well-kept monastery of the Madonna of Skiadeni, which is still inhabited by monks and in which you can see a silver icon of Virgin Mary.
