The village of Salakos is located at the foot of the mountain of Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elijah) about 7 km from the northwest coast towards the interior of Rhodes. The village has about 600 inhabitants who are mainly engaged in agriculture, cattle breeding and tourism. Traditions and customs are of great importance to the local people.

In the past, the village of Salakos was famous for its handmade wooden chairs, each of which was individually hand-carved. Even today, it is possible to have these chairs carved, although their production is now rather symbolic. The locals benefit in particular from the clean and rich nature of the area which is full of olive trees and vinesyards and there is also the natural spring of Nymphs. Today, Salakos is known for the fine walnuts that grow here.

The natural spring is named after the mythological deity of Nymphs, who was supposed to protect the spring in the past. This is also the name of the only tourist hotel in the village and there are also several taverns and cafés serving visitors. The small, stone and shady square with fig trees and spring water is beautiful.

The nearest beach is the pretty, organised, sand and shingle beach of Kamiros. Not far from the beach (about 2 km inland), the important archaeological site of Kamiros i located, that reveals the remains of the ancient city of Kamiros, which was one of the most powerful cities on the island of Rhodes between the 6th and 5th century BC.

The village of Salakos is also an archaeologically important site, as several remains from the Hellenistic period and then several churches from the Byzantine period have been found here.
