The picturesque inland village of Vati is located in the southern part of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 70 km southwest of the capital city. Vati is a village hidden in the forests, which is not affected by the hustle and bustle of the seaside resorts.
The mountain village of Vati is located in the interior of Rhodes, on the road from Gennadi towards the west coast of the island, to the village of Apolakkia. The village is surrounded by pine forests and perennial (wild) olive groves, whose owner, according to legend, was Kleovoulos of Lindos.
The village of Vati consists of several traditional small houses and a pretty square, dominated by the 19th-century church of Agios Ioannis Theologos. There is also a small café in the square where locals gather every day to drink traditional Greek coffee, talk about the news or play cards. And as it happens in such small villages, the café also serves as a mini market and post office. And while you probably won't run into any other tourists here, don't be shy to sit down for a while either, the people here are very friendly.
According to the locals, the name of the village is derived from a word meaning "crossing" or "passage".
Among the most famous local religious festivals, which are attended by extended families from all over the island, are the feast of the Virgin Mary "Galatousa" (15 August) and the feast of the Archangel Michael "Paralimiotis" (first Saturday in September).
Vati is such a traditional Rhodian village, which lives its own life and definitely cannot be described as one of the tourist resorts of Rhodes. On the contrary, Vati can be a nice destination if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the coast for a while and just take a quiet walk through the wild nature and soak up the true Greek atmosphere.
Not far from here are the ruins of the medieval castle of Asklipio and towards the western coast of the island, the ruins of another Johannite castle of Monolithos rise on a high cliff. For a more touristy environment, you have to look towards the east coast of the island, where you can find, for example, the resort of Kiotari or the famous tourist resort of Lindos, where the original ancient village of Lindos (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site) has been preserved.
