The remains of the medieval castle of Asklipio stand near the eastern coast of the Greek island of Rhodes. The castle is located in the inland of the island, on a hill above the village of the same name, about 64 km southwest of the capital city.
Asklipio (or Asklepieion) Castle was built in 1479, according to surviving information, in a strategic location on a 250-metre-high hill overlooking the surrounding area. In the Byzantine period, during the time of the Johannite Knights, the castle served as a refuge from enemy attacks for the inhabitants of the surrounding villages.
The building had massive defensive walls, two watchtowers and its only entrance was located at the southeast corner wall. Remains of the outer walls, part of the southeastern tower and the foundations of small buildings inside the castle have been preserved.
Nowadays, the ruins of the Johannite castle are relatively easy to reach, with signs pointing you from the village of Asklipio to a narrow winding path heading up the hill. You'll be rewarded for the hike up to the castle with a beautiful view of the surrounding area, you can see as far as Kiotari beach from here.
