The Church of Archangel Michael forms a beautiful landmark of the historic town of Archangelos, located inland at the eastern coast of the Greek island of Rhodes. Saint Michael is the patron of the entire town.
The tall, white church with a beautiful bell tower dates back to 1845 and is dedicated to Saint Michael. Michael, the most famous of the Archangels, or Angels of God, who enjoyed special significance and reverence, became the protector of the local people and the village of Archangelos was named after him. Today Archangelos is no longer a town, but it is still considered a place where old Greek traditions and crafts survive.
Inside, the Orthodox church is richly decorated and you can see a variety of religious objects, including beautiful icons of the Archangel Michael. As a sign of respect for the saint, appropriate clothing (draped shoulders and knees) is required to enter the church.
The Church of the Archangel Michael stands about 3 km off the east coast of Rhodes, about 30 km south of the capital city of Rhodes. However, it is not the only place on the island that refers to Saint Michael. The Byzantine Monastery of the Archangel Michael, or Moni Thari Monastery, located in the central interior of the island, near the town of Laerma, is also well known and very interesting. You can also visit the unique Archangel Michael's Cave, which is hidden on the west coast of the capital city of Rhodes (best accessed directly from the beach up a flight of stone steps).
