The ruins of the Johannite castle of Feraklos rise on a hill above the bay of Haraki, which lies at the east coast of the Greek island of Rhodes, about 36 km southwest of the capital city of Rhodes.
The mighty fortress of Feraklos was conquered by the Knights of St. John at the beginning of the 14th century and subsequently, in the second half of the 15th century, the building was reconstructed and modernised. In its time, the castle was mainly used as a prison for prisoners of war, but it was also a place of exile for knights who somehow transgressed against the laws of that time. The keepers of the fortress also kept a protective hand over the adjacent sugar cane plantations, which were processed in factories right here, below the castle.
It is also said among the locals that the fort was once a pirate base.
Unfortunately, not much of the fortress has survived, but the remains of the walls and the foundations of the palaces and defensive towers are still visible.
The remains of Feraklos Fortress tower over the village of Haraki, one of the smaller and quieter resorts on Rhodes and a hike to its ruins is one of the favourite excursions of local visitors.
And although not much of the original fortress is standing nowadays, you'll get a great view of the surrounding area from the hill. From here, you'll have the bay with Haraki Beach and the neighbouring, very beautiful beach of Agia Agatha in the palm of your hand.
