The small monastery of Moni Panagias Kalopetras is located in the northern part of the Greek island of Rhodes, near the famous nature reserve called the Valley of the Butterflies.
Moni Panagias Kalopetras Monastery dates back to 1782 and was built by Alexander Ypsilandis, the grandfather of the famous fighter for the freedom of Greece. It is more of a small white church, with a small residential building attached to it. It is said that the only monk who takes care of the church lives there.
The monastery of Kalopetras is located in the interior of the island, about 28 km from the capital city of Rhodes. A simple building on the outside hides a beautiful interior decorated with colourful paintings, chandeliers and three 19th century icons. In the courtyard, in the pleasant shade of mature trees, there are stone benches and tables.
Most visitors visit the monastery as part of a trip to the so-called Valley of the Butterflies, as the church stands right at the top end of the walking route. The Valley of the Butterflies (also known as Petaloudes) is a beautiful green valley that is unique in that entire flocks of the Jersey tiger butterfly congregate here during mating season, covering tree trunks and large rocks. The trail also includes a butterfly museum.
