One of the best wineries and the largest wine producer on the Greek island of Santorini is located at the top of the caldera, on the west coast of the island. Santo Wines was founded in 1947 and today is one of the most modern wineries on the Greek islands.
Thanks to the volcanic soil rich in minerals, Santorini's winemaking has a long and specific tradition and the local wines are renowned for their delicious taste. The length of sunshine and the low rainfall also contribute to their unique taste, which causes the grapes to be infused with concentrated juice. The local liquid wonder is called Vinsanto, the 'Holy Wine of Santorini'.
In the winery you will find a large variety of the best Greek wines not only from Santorini, but also from other Greek islands. Apart from the fact that you can of course buy individual wines here, we recommend taking advantage of the wine tasting offer first. You can either choose the wines to taste yourself or get advice from the friendly and welcoming staff.
The winery also has a small wine bar that serves as a museum tracing the history of winemaking on the island, and you can also watch a short documentary about the cultivation of the vine on Santorini. If you are interested in the history of winemaking, we recommend a visit to the Koutsoyannopoulos Wine and Winery Museum in the central part of the island's interior (a large and very interesting museum with historical exhibits and moving wax figures, located in a natural cave deep underground). The local shop Santo Wines offers traditional Greek dishes and delicacies for purchase in addition to local wines.
The Santo Wines winery is part of the traditional Greek village of Pyrgos, which sits on the hillside, offering spectacular views of the impressive caldera walls and the vast Aegean Sea. If you're thinking of a romantic evening on the island, a visit to the winery could be a good tip for a day trip - book a wine tasting on the winery's terrace and just let the view of the breathtaking sunset take you away. It's not so surprising that Santo Wines is a popular venue for wedding ceremonies and receptions.
