The very well organised, sandy beach of Agios Nikolaos is located in the south-eastern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, close to the famous tourist resort of Vassilikos. Agios Nikolaos beach is located about 15 km southeast of the main town of Zante.
Agios Nikolaos beach gets its name from the picturesque little church of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas), which stands on the left (northern) side of the beach and has become a beautiful symbol of the place. The beach lies at the very south-eastern tip of Zakynthos. It is covered with fine, golden sand that continues along the seabed.
Agios Nikolaos is one of the liveliest and most entertaining beaches on Zakynthos. It's quite wide and offers a variety of services and activities - from beach service in the form of sunbeds, umbrellas and showers, to a number of restaurants, tavernas and hotels, to a range of water adrenaline sports, including diving. For the most part, Agios Nikolaos beach is organised and very busy, but a little further on the right (south) side of the beach you can find a few quiet spots.
Thanks to its sandy shoreline and clear, turquoise water, Agios Nikolaos is also popular with families with young children. However, a large number of young people also come here to enjoy the company and the pleasant bars and other tourist facilities.
Agios Nikolaos beach can be reached quite easily by turning off the main road. If you take the road from the capital of Zakynthos towards the resort of Vassilikos, as you pass through the pine forest, turn left and follow the side road to the beach.
There are several beautiful beaches in the area around Vassilikos. To the north, Agios Nikolaos is bordered by the small and pleasant beach of Plaka and the long, sandy beach of Banana, which is one of the largest beaches on the island and one of the most beautiful. To the south you can visit, for example, the smaller and quiet sandy beach of Porto Roma or the beautiful sandy beach of Gerakas, famous for its nesting Caretta Caretta turtles.
Note that there is another beach on Zakynthos, Agios Nikolaos. It is located in the northeastern part of the island near the resort of the same name, Agios Nikolaos, and is an important port on the island, from where ferries run to Kefalonia, for example. It is a small pebble beach with deep water.
