The long and spacious sandy beach of Alykes is located in the northeastern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, about 18 km northwest of the capital Zante. Alykes is one of the most popular beaches of Zakynthos with very good tourist facilities.
Alykes Beach (also spelled Alikes) is a beautiful beach with fine golden sand, crystal clear water and a gradual entrance to the sea. The sandy surface continues along the seabed and Alykes beach is popular with families with children and the elderly or non-swimmers. Alykes is regularly awarded the EU Blue Flag, which is given to beaches for their safety, cleanliness of the beach and sea, and good organisation.
At its southern end, Alykes beach connects seamlessly to the neighbouring Alikanas beach and it is difficult to tell where one beach ends and the other begins. Therefore, the boundary between the two beaches is sometimes referred to as the mouth of the local Skourtis river into the sea. The beaches are very similar in type, but Alykes beach is a little busier and usually sees more tourists than Alykanas beach.
Alykes Beach is adjacent to the holiday resort of the same name, Alykes. The tourist facilities of the resort and the beach are very good, and beachgoers can make use of sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, the beach's sanitary facilities (toilets, showers, etc.) and the varied food and drink offer of the local beach taverns and bars. In addition to sunbathing and swimming in the azure Ionian Sea, one of the most popular activities for tourists is the adrenaline-fuelled water sports offered by the local sports club. Visitors can try windsurfing, kitesurfing, banana boating or rent pedal boats, for example.
The beach can be walked to the neighbouring Alykanas beach and also to the adjacent resort of Alykanas, where there are other restaurants, bars and shops. From the small harbour at the neighbouring Alykanas beach, boats regularly depart during the summer season to the beautiful blue caves, the iconic Navagio beach with its smuggler's shipwreck, the nearby Xigia "sulphur" beach and other famous beaches of the island. The coastline of nearby Kefalonia can also be seen in the distance from Alykes.
