The quiet, semi-organized sandy beach of Dafni is located in the southeastern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, about 15 km southeast of the main town of Zante. Dafni is one of the protected beaches, as Caretta Caretta turtles nest here.
The long and vast sandy beach of Dafni stretches to the very south-eastern tip of Zakynthos, near the very pleasant and quiet resort of Vassilikos (approx. 7 km). The beach is covered with rather grainy, golden sand and is surrounded by rugged green hills. The entrance to the sea here is very gradual. Dafni is described as one of the cleanest and most peaceful beaches on Zakynthos.
Dafni beach (along with other beaches on the southern coast of Zakynthos) is part of the National Marine Park, which aims to protect the wildlife in the area. The protected sea turtles Caretta Caretta come to Dafni beach to lay their eggs in the sand. Dafni is therefore a special beach - the coastal part of the beach is purely natural and unorganised, and visitors should keep their distance from areas marked with a 'turtle's nest' sign and not stick umbrellas in the sand. Access to the beach is prohibited after dusk and no water sports, bars, etc. are allowed to protect the beach from excessive noise.
Dafni beach is partially organised. It is divided into two levels - the unorganised lower (coastal) part and the elevated part of the beach where visitors can use sunbeds and umbrellas as well as the services of the tavern. Access to the beach is quite difficult, as there is a dusty, bumpy road leading to the beach, which is also very steep. You can't get to the beach by car, you have to leave it at the top of the hill in the parking lot. However, down on the beach, you will find a longed-for rest in peace and privacy. And it's said that this area also has the warmest sea in the whole area around Zakynthos.
There are several beautiful beaches in the area around Vassilikos. Not far from Dafni beach, for example, is the very similar Gerakas beach, which is also part of the national marine reserve. From Gerakas and Dafni beaches, you can see the small island of Pelouzo, where people are not allowed to enter, as the island has become a sanctuary for the protected water turtle Caretta Caretta and the protected sea seal Monachus monachus. The beach also offers a good view of the very popular Laganas Bay.
