Gerakas Beach - Zakynthos island

Gerakas

The beautiful, semi-organized sandy beach of Gerakas is located in the southeastern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, about 17 km southeast of the capital Zante. Gerakas is one of the protected beaches, as Caretta Caretta turtles nest here.

Gerakas beach is situated in a bay at the very southeastern tip of Zakynthos, near the very pleasant and quiet resort of Vassilikos (about 5 km). Gerakas Bay is very spacious and surrounded by rock formations that protect it from the wind and high waves. The surface of the beach is made up of fine golden sand, which continues along the seabed. The sea shines with its clarity and azure colour and, together with the gradual entry into the water, attracts families with children.

Gerakas beach is traditionally known as one of the most beautiful beaches on Zakynthos. It is very quiet and ideal for relaxing away from the busy resorts of the island.

Gerakas beach is partially organized. Visitors are provided with sunbeds and umbrellas and in the main summer season also a lifeguard. However, there are no showers or changing cabins and beach bars and similar tourist facilities are prohibited on the beach, as well as water sports, as Gerakas is a special regime beach. Gerakas beach (along with other beaches on the southern coast of Zakynthos) falls under the so-called National Marine Park, which aims to protect the wildlife in the area. The endangered Caretta Caretta turtles nest on Gerakas beach, so you are only allowed to enter the beach between dawn and dusk (no noise or lights at night), and even during the day you have to follow special rules, such as keeping away from areas marked with a "turtle nest" sign, not sticking umbrellas in the sand, etc.

Several taverns and bars are located up above the beach, where tourists can also use the free parking. However, it is advisable to take plenty of water or other liquids with you to the beach, as the nearest mini-markets are in the village of Vassilikos.

There are several beautiful beaches in the area around Vassilikos. Not far from Gerakas beach, for example, is the smaller and quieter Porto Roma beach or the large sandy beach of Dafni, which is also part of the national marine reserve as Gerakas beach. From Gerakas and Dafni beaches, you can see the small island of Pelouzo, where people are not allowed to enter, as the islet has become a sanctuary for the protected harbour seal Monachus monachus and the protected water turtle Caretta caretta.
