The beautiful sandy and organized beach of Kalamaki is located in the southern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, in the bay of Laganas. It is located about 7 km south of the main town of Zante. Kalamaki beach is known as a nesting site of Caretta Caretta sea turtles.
Kalamaki is a popular sandy beach located at the eastern end of Laganas Bay, adjacent to the eponymous resort of Kalamaki. The resort of Kalamaki is very touristy, popular, yet still very relaxed and peaceful. Kalamaki beach is similar in type, and visitors of all ages head there.
The surface of the beach consists of beautifully fine, golden sand, which continues along the seabed. Together with the gradual entry into the water, the beach is also an attraction for families with small children. Because the water is shallow and calm, it is also pleasantly warm. The picturesque atmosphere of the beach is enhanced by the impressive rock formations and lush greenery around. Some parts of the beach are rather sandy and pebbly.
Kalamaki beach is organised and well equipped for tourism. Visitors can find sun loungers and umbrellas, showers and changing cabins. Several beach bars, tavernas and restaurants are scattered along the promenade and there are also hotels and other accommodation facilities nearby.
Kalamaki is part of the Zakynthos National Marine Park, an organisation that protects the Greek natural heritage and ecological balance in the southern part of Zakynthos. Kalamaki beach is home to the endangered Caretta Caretta (giant hawksbill turtle), and the rules for staying on these beaches are adapted to this. Amongst other things, emphasis is placed on keeping the beach clean, marking turtle nests with signs and observing the night-time calm. The small turtles hatch mainly at night and must not be disturbed by noise or lights in order to reach the sea safely. Only non-motorised water sports such as pedal boats, canoes etc. are allowed on Kalamaki beach.
Kalamaki is the closest beach to Zakynthos airport, located about 6 km south of the capital Zante. However, tourists staying in this area do not have to worry about the night noise from landing and taking off planes, as night flights on Zakynthos are severely restricted or completely suspended precisely for the protection of the sea turtles.
Kalamaki beach is beautiful and popular, and therefore it can get quite crowded in high season. At the end of the beach you will also find an unofficial nude beach. Kalamaki beach is slowly followed by the beautiful sandy beach of Laganas, which is one of the most popular and longest beaches on Zakynthos.
