The narrow sand and shingle beach of Porto Koukla is located in the southern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, in the bay of Laganas. It is located about 13 km southwest of the main town of Zante.
Porto Koukla is a small, mostly sandy and pebbly beach located in the western part of the vast bay of Laganas, adjacent to the tourist resort of the same name, Porto Koukla. The resort of Porto Koukla is a pleasant and peaceful resort set in the surrounding greenery. It is mainly frequented by couples and families with smaller children.
Porto Koukla beach is narrow and quiet, surrounded by bushes and other vegetation. Its surface is made up of sand and pebbles, and there are areas of the beach that are pure sand, sand and pebbles and parts of the coastline where large pebbles predominate. The sand in these parts of the bay is more of a greyish colour, but it is beautifully fine and thanks to the gradual entry into the sea, Porto Koukla beach is also popular with families with children. The sea is clear and warm.
The beach is organised, with sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as showers and toilets. There are also several bars and taverns along the beach, which often offer seafood dishes.
To the east, Porto Koukla beach is seamlessly connected to the neighbouring Agios Sostis beach (about 1 km away), which is also narrower and covered with beautifully fine, golden-coloured sand. Agios Sostis has a fishing harbour, where cruise boats and boats can be hired to cruise around the island of Zakynthos. There are three small islands in the bay of Laganas. From Porto Koukla beach, the island of Marathonisi, the so-called Turtle Island, is easily visible, where the protected Caretta Caretta turtles come to lay their eggs in the sand. In the eastern part of the bay is the island of Pelouzo, which in turn has been chosen as a refuge by the endangered Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus. And just a short distance from the beach, the small island of Cameo juts out of the sea, which can also be reached by boat (there is a small pebble beach on the far side of the island called Cameo) or even by dry foot, as a small wooden bridge leads from the next beach, Agios Sostis, to the island. If you head to the north of Zakynthos, the so-called blue caves and the "smuggler's" bay of Navagio are definitely among the favourite boat trips.
