How to get to Zakynthos island

Zakynthos, a very popular Greek island in the Ionian Sea, is accessible by two possible routes, by air or by sea. There is an international airport on the island, so the faster and more convenient way is of course by air. But thanks to the several ports, Zakynthos can also be reached by boat without difficulty. Ferries also carry cars and buses.

Ferry to Zakynthos

The main and largest harbour of Zakynthos is located in the capital of Zakynthos, on the south-east coast of the island. It is here that ferries from the Greek mainland, specifically from the port of Killini on the western Peloponnese or from the port of Patras on the northern Peloponnese, head. The ferry from the mainland to the island takes about an hour.

For transport to Zakynthos, you can also use the direct bus service from Athens, which runs daily during the peak summer season and takes about 6 hours, including the ferry from Killini. Using the ferry, you can reach Zakynthos by car.

During the high summer season there is also a boat connection between Zakynthos and several neighbouring islands. Ferries to neighbouring Kefalonia also run in the low season, departing from the main port of Zakynthos and heading for the Kefalonian port of Poros, while in the summer smaller cruise ships also use the smaller ports of Agios Nikolaos on Zakynthos and Pesada in Kefalonia.

In general, therefore, the Greek island of Zakynthos is linked by ferry services mainly to mainland Greece, Kefalonia and Italy.

Air to Zakynthos

Dionysios Solomos Airport (ZTH) is the international airport that connects Zakynthos primarily with Athens International Airport (primarily operated by Olympic Airlines). However, as a popular holiday destination, Zakynthos also receives direct charter flights from many European countries during the summer season (May to October). A specific feature of Zakynthos airport is the limited number of flights during the main tourist season, and night arrivals and departures are prohibited on the island to protect the Caretta turtles.

Outside of the main tourist season, flights to Zakynthos are only from Athens, with a flight time of approximately 50 minutes.

Dionysios Solomos Airport is located just 5 km south of the capital Zante and is easily accessible by car, bus or taxi.
