The small mountain village of Agios Dimitrios is located in the central part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, about 10 km west of the main town of Zante. The village has a historic windmill and the church of St. Dimitrios.
Agios Dimitrios is a very peaceful and secluded village located in the interior of Zakynthos. The village offers a true retreat for those who crave the peace and quiet of nature, while being within easy driving distance of the busy seaside resorts. There are several shops in the village.
The village was named after the Bishop of Catania in Sicily, who became Saint Dimitrios after his canonisation. The church of St. Dimitrios was built in his honour in the 14th century. There is also a chapel in the village, which boasts one interesting feature - its bell tower is located in a windmill.
Unfortunately, the village of Agios Dimitrios also suffered great damage in the Ionian earthquake of 1953.
The capital of Zakynthos with its beautiful historical monuments, wide shopping, hospitality and entertainment opportunities is located about 10 km to the east. The beautiful sandy beaches are not far away either. For example, the long golden beach of Alykes is about 10 minutes away by car, and the beautiful sandy beach of Tsilivi, also suitable for water sports, is about 15 minutes away.
