The small resort of Agios Leontas (or Agios Leon) is located in the western part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, about 22 km west of the capital Zante. The village of Agios Leon is situated in the hills, at an altitude of 390 metres above sea level.
Agios Leontas (or Agios Leon) is a quiet Zakynthos resort, only partially affected by tourism. The narrow streets and stone houses with red tiled roofs preserve the original, picturesque image of the village. The inhabitants pride themselves on the production of local products, such as the delicious 'choriatiko' bread baked in wood-fired ovens made from olive trees, various types of local cheese (Feta, Prentza, Graviera, etc.), local wine and quality olive oil produced by the local family-run Vouno company.
There are several tavernas, cafes and shops in Agios Leontas. Accommodation is mainly in private apartments. The mountain village of Agios Leon also offers beautiful views of the surrounding area (it lies at an altitude of 390 m above sea level).
The village was named after the Bishop of Catania in Sicily, who became Saint Leon after his canonisation. A church was built in his honour in the 14th century, which is still a symbol of the village of Agios Leontas today. There is another chapel in the village, which is unique because its bell tower was placed in a converted windmill. The bell tower's gallery offers a beautiful view of the village and its surroundings.
The village of Agios Leon has about 500 inhabitants, who are mainly engaged in agriculture. There is a thriving wine and olive industry in the area, so you will find a large number of vineyards and olive groves as you wander around. The surrounding countryside is unspoilt and unorganised, covered in pine trees. The village is ideal for those who want to see a part of Zakynthos not affected by tourism.
The rocky beaches of Limnionas and Porta Roxa, 5 km away, are certainly worth a visit, as they are very atypical and reminiscent of small fjords. Limnionas beach is a beautiful bay with high cliffs, crystal clear water and sea caves. There is a small taverna above the bay that also rents out a few umbrellas and sunbeds, but many visitors lay out their towels right on the rocks. Not far away is another rocky beach, Porto Roxa, with very comfortable beach beds. The access to the sea here is also difficult and steep, but the sea is crystal clear.
