The small seaside resort with the eponymous port of Agios Nikolaos is located in the northeastern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, about 30 km northwest of the capital Zante. From the port, boats leave for the blue caves and Navagio beach as well as ferries to the island of Kefalonia.
Agios Nikolaos is a small village off the north-east coast of Zakynthos, but with an important harbour. From the busy port of Agios Nikolaos, boats and barges leave daily for the most beautiful places on Zakynthos, as well as ferries to the nearby island of Kefalonia. Off the coast lies a small rocky islet, also named Agios Nikolaos, which protects the harbour from the northerly winds.
The resort of Agios Nikolaos itself is quiet and small, and very elongated in shape. In fact, the resort is made up of one main road which runs close to the coastline and around which all the shops, tavernas and restaurants are located. For accommodation, interested parties can take advantage of the offer of private apartments or rooms in smaller guesthouses.
Agios Nikolaos beach is adjacent to the resort, although it is more likely to be a few small stretches of beach, which are furnished with sun loungers or where visitors can lay out their towels and umbrellas. Agios Nikolaos beach is most commonly referred to as the section right in the middle of the bay and harbour. Also popular is the tiny Madrakia beach, located by the taverna of the same name.
The village has only a few dozen permanent residents and is almost deserted during the winter months. Administratively, the village of Agios Nikolaos belongs to the town of Volimes, located about 10 km inland.
One of the most popular excursions on Zakynthos is a cruise to the so-called blue caves. There are several blue caves off the coast of Zakynthos and the most famous ones are located between the port of Agios Nikolaos and the northernmost tip of the island (Cape Skinari), and then further along the north-west coast of the island to the resort of Volimes and the famous Navagio beach.
For the cruise to the blue caves, we recommend choosing smaller boats that can go under the rock arches or even into the caves. This will enhance your experience of these places.
One of the main tourist attractions of Zakynthos is also a visit to the so-called Shipwreck Beach - Navagio Beach, which became famous thanks to the legend of the wreck of a smuggler's ship, whose wreck still lies in the sand and pebbles. Navagio Beach is only accessible from the sea and only in good weather, as it is located in a narrow bay. The bay lies off the northwest coast of the island and it takes about half an hour to sail here from the port of Agios Nikolaos. A beautiful view of the bay with the beach can be seen from the top of the high and steep cliffs, where the viewpoint was also created. The viewpoint is most easily reached via the nearby villages of Volimes or Anafonitria.
There are also ferries from the port of Agios Nikolaos to the neighbouring Greek island of Kefalonia, to the port of Pesada. Kefalonia is very close to Zakynthos (to the north), and during the peak summer season ferries arrive daily, making it possible to take a day trip to this neighbouring Greek island.
