Tourist resort Agios Sostis

The popular seaside resort of Agios Sostis is located in the western (southern) half of the vast Laganas Bay, between the other popular tourist resorts of Laganas and Porto Koukla or Limni Keri. The terrain of Agios Sostis is flat and turns inland into hills. The area is also criss-crossed by various paths that lead through the beautiful countryside among olive and pine trees, which are often used by locals and tourists alike for walks.

Agios Sostis is a pleasant and relatively quiet resort with good tourist facilities. Visitors can take advantage of the many restaurants, bars, taverns, various shops and services such as car rental, pharmacy and boat rental. Accommodation in Agios Sostis is also varied, with a choice of larger hotels and smaller family-run guesthouses or villas.

Agios Sostis beach and Cameo island

Adjacent to the resort is the beach of the same name, Agios Sostis, which is sandy, with a gradual entrance to the sea, but very narrow. However, Agios Sostis beach is well equipped and, as it is not very wide and occupied by several rows of sunbeds, visitors can enjoy the tranquillity of the place and the beautiful azure sea. The main promenade stretches along the beach, full of bars, restaurants and tavernas, and there are also several shops and a disco.

The village of Agios Sostis grew up around a small fishing harbour, which has been preserved to this day. Nowadays, the harbour has a boat rental service, where you can rent boats with a skipper or on your own and explore the most interesting places of the Zakynthos coast and the nearby islands of Marathonisi, Pelouzo and Cameo (Ag. Sostis).

The northern end of Agios Sostis beach is bordered by a wooden bridge that leads from the beach to the small, eponymous islet of Agios Sostis. This was separated from the mainland by a massive earthquake in the 17th century and is now a unique tourist attraction of the area. The island of Agios Sostis is interesting for its rock formations and views of the surrounding area, there are even two bars and a small pebble beach called Cameo on the far side of the island. The island is named after the small church of Agios Sostis, but locals call it Cameo Island (after one of the bars on the island).

Agios Sostis beach on the north side is seamlessly connected to one of Zakynthos' most popular beaches, the sandy, spacious and very well organised Laganas beach. You can also walk south to the other neighbouring beach, Porto Koukla, which is also narrower and mostly sand and shingle.

Tips for trips in the surroundings

The area of Agios Sostis is ideal for walks in the surroundings, especially in the beautiful countryside and along the coast. While strolling along the beach, you can visit the local Cameo islet, which can also be reached on foot thanks to a wooden footbridge. This small forest islet is a very photogenic place, so it is not surprising that it is often chosen by newlyweds for their wedding photos.

There are also car and scooter rentals in Agios Sostis, so we recommend exploring the island. Check out our Zakynthos Sightseeing and Excursions tips. The capital of Zakynthos (Zante) is only about 12 km away and regular buses from the capital also go to Agios Sostis. The capital of Zakynthos is a beautiful harbour town, very picturesque and welcoming. The cathedral of St. Dionysius or St. Mark's Square are particularly famous. In the capital you can also enjoy a wealth of shopping and entertainment opportunities.

There are also daily boat trips from Agios Sostis beach to nearby islands and resorts. The nearby island of Marathonisi is renowned for its sea turtles and its shape, and is known as "turtle island". The island of Pelouzo, for a change, has chosen the endangered Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus as its refuge. The breathtaking blue caves or the iconic Navagio beach are also popular destinations for boat trips.

For whom Agios Sostis is suitable

The tourist resort of Agios Sostis is a small and quiet resort, especially popular with families with children and couples. Thanks to the good tourist facilities, they are well taken care of and the small, sandy beach is ideal for relaxing and having fun in the shallow water. The more spacious beaches are not far away, with the sandy Porto Koukla beach to the south of Agios Sostis and the very popular, busy and wide Laganas beach to the north.

The nightlife in Agios Sostis is very quiet, for busier evening entertainment we recommend going either to the islet of Cameo, where there is a night bar and disco, or to the neighbouring resort of Laganas (about 2 km), whose centre is alive until the morning, or straight to the capital Zante.
