Tourist resort Alykanas

The resort of Alykanas (or Alikanas) is one of the most popular holiday resorts on Zakynthos, together with the neighbouring resort of Alykes. The resorts are located about 1 km apart and are very similar in type, but Alykanas is a bit quieter than Alykes and there are fewer tourists. Alykanas is set in picturesque countryside full of olive trees and other greenery, washed on one side by the beautifully clear Ionian Sea and inland by rising hills.

The villages of Alykanas and Alykes get their names from the salt mines (called 'alykes' in Greek) that were built in the area in the past and can still be seen behind the town today.

The resort of Alykanas has very good tourist facilities, with many tavernas, restaurants and bars as well as a variety of shops. There are car rental shops, pharmacies, ATMs and other tourist services in the resort. In terms of accommodation, the offer is also wide, visitors can choose from several hotels, but also guesthouses, bungalows or private apartments.

Alykanas beach and tips for trips

Alykanas is located on the north-eastern coast of Zakynthos, by the nice sandy beach of Alykanas with a small harbour. Alykanas beach is one of the quieter beaches, but it is organized and has a gradual entrance to the sea, so we often see families with small children or couples. There are several tavernas and beach bars around the beach, and visitors can rent sunbeds and umbrellas and try some of the water adrenaline sports on offer.

Alykanas beach is located in the small bay of Alykes, bordered on one side by the harbour with fishing and cruise boats and at the other end by the mouth of the local Skourtis river into the sea. To the north, Alykanas beach connects to the neighbouring Alykes beach and the neighbouring resort can be reached by walking along the beach.

Boats and small cruise boats leave from the local harbour to the so-called blue caves or to Xigia beach with its healing sulphur springs. A popular boat trip on Zakynthos is also a cruise to the famous Navagio beach, a bay with a smuggler's shipwreck.

The area around the resort is particularly suitable for hiking or cycling. Alykanas lies in an area of archaeological finds, mainly from the Mycenaean period, and there are smaller archaeological sites. We also recommend renting a car or other means of transport to explore the beauty of Zakynthos Island more thoroughly, the capital city of Zakynthos is about 16 km away.

For whom is Alykanas suitable

Alykanas is one of the less busy holiday resorts, but the range of services, including accommodation, is quite wide and tourists are increasingly taking advantage of this comfort. A big advantage of this resort is definitely the organized sandy beach of Alykanas with a gradual entrance to the sea. A large part of visitors to Alykanas are families with smaller children or couples.

The resort of Alykanas is especially suitable for lovers of swimming and beautiful nature, who will find their own place here. The surrounding area is ideal for hiking or cycling. If you want to taste local specialities in a classic Greek taverna with live music, visit the original village of Alikanas during your wanderings. Of course, you can also rent a car or motorbike and venture further afield on the island.
