Tourist resort Alykes

The resort of Alykes (or Alikes) is one of the most popular holiday resorts on Zakynthos, together with the neighbouring resort of Alykanas. The resorts are located about 1 km apart, but with the ever-expanding development, they are slowly being connected. The resorts are similar in type, but Alykes is a busier resort and there are considerably more tourists than the neighbouring resort of Alykanas. Alykes is set in a picturesque landscape at the foot of the hills, full of olive trees and other greenery and bathed by the azure Ionian Sea.

The villages of Alykes and Alykanas get their names from the salt mines (called 'alykes' in Greek) that were built in the area after the end of the Second World War and used extensively until the 1970s. Today, these former salinas are primarily home to a variety of animal and plant species and are a popular place for walks. They are located just outside the town.

The resort of Alykes has very good tourist facilities, with a number of tavernas, restaurants, bars and a variety of shops, including souvenir stalls. Visitors to the resort will find both traditional taverns with typical Greek cuisine, including delicacies prepared from the so-called gifts of the sea, and restaurants with international cuisine. Tourists can also choose from a wide range of accommodation, which includes several beautiful hotels as well as smaller guesthouses and villas, bungalows and private apartments. Visitors can also take advantage of other accompanying tourist services such as car rental, pharmacies, ATMs, public bus transport, etc.

Alykes beach and tips for trips

Alykes is located on the northeast coast of Zakynthos, on the long and spacious sandy beach of Alykes. Alykes Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island and its quality and cleanliness is regularly awarded the EU Blue Flag. Families with smaller children, couples and non-swimmers alike come here for the fine golden sand, the gradual entry into the sea and the crystal clear water.

Alykes Beach is well organised, and in addition to sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, there are several beach bars and tavernas where beachgoers can refresh themselves and enjoy, for example, chilled mixed drinks. Other tavernas and restaurants are then located in the resort of Alykes itself. There is also a water sports centre on the beach.

To the south, Alykes Beach is seamlessly connected to the neighbouring Alykanas Beach, with only the mouth of the local Skourtis River separating the beaches. From Alykes and Alykanas beaches, boats and small excursion boats sail in summer to the so-called blue caves or, for example, to Xigia beach with its healing sulphur springs, which lies not far from Alykes beach (about 7 km northwards). A popular boat trip on Zakynthos is also a cruise to the now iconic Navagio Bay with the wreck of a smuggler's ship.

The area around the resort is particularly suitable for hiking or cycling, and horseback riding can be arranged. Alykes lies in an area of archaeological finds, mainly from the Mycenaean period, and there are smaller archaeological sites. We also recommend renting a car or other means of transport to explore the beauty of Zakynthos more thoroughly, the capital city of Zakynthos is about 18 km away.

For whom Alykes is suitable

Alykes is one of the busier holiday resorts, but because most of its visitors are families with children or couples, it still maintains a pleasant and peaceful atmosphere. The nightlife is not too buzzing, with a few bars operating in the resort, but for livelier nightlife we recommend heading to the popular resort of Laganas or the main town of Zante.

The resort of Alykes is especially suitable for those who like swimming and beautiful nature for walks, but who also want to rely on the resort's good tourist facilities and good transport links.
