The small village of Anafonitria is located in the northwestern part of the inland of the Greek island of Zakynthos, about 30 km northwest of the main town of Zante. The 15th century monastery of the same name stands close to the village and the famous Navagio beach with its shipwreck is nearby.
The smaller, inland village of Anafonitria is located near the northwest coast of Zakynthos, between the other smaller villages of Volimes and Maries. The village takes its name from the nearby Anafonitria Monastery, which was probably founded in the mid-15th century, making it one of the oldest buildings on Zakynthos. Anafonitria Monastery was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and its history was also significantly linked to Saint Dionysus, the patron saint of Zakynthos, who spent the last years of his life here.
The village has about 200 permanent inhabitants. The small and quiet resort of Anafonitria still retains its traditional architecture with charming old houses and whitewashed walls. The local shops offer agricultural and other traditional products, especially local honey, olive oil and handmade products. Visitors to the village will especially appreciate the local tavernas and the accommodation options (private rooms or small villas).
Tourists stop in the village of Anafonitria mainly as part of a trip to the nearby Anafonitria Monastery and the magnificent viewpoint of Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), one of the most famous and photographed beaches on Zakynthos. Through the village of Anafonitria, one drives up the cliffs to the parking lot and viewpoint (about 4 km away), where visitors have the iconic bay with the beach and the rusting shipwreck right in the palm of their hands.
The small resort of Anafonitria lies somewhat hidden in the interior of Zakynthos, away from the busy holiday resorts and tourist resorts of Zakynthos. Located about 30 km northwest of the capital Zante, between the small resorts of Maries and Volimes, most of those who visit Anafonitria are tourists heading further afield to the viewpoint over the beach and Navagio Bay.
Anafonitria can provide visitors with basic tourist facilities in the form of tavernas, shops and smaller accommodation. We would recommend a stay in this resort especially for those who seek tranquility, beautiful nature, spectacular sunsets and places that are not so touristy. The west coast of the island is mostly rocky and forms very interesting rock formations, south of the village (about 6 km) is the bay of Porto Vromi with a pebble beach and anchorage for smaller cruise ships and boats. On the way to Porto Vromi, we recommend visiting the beautiful Anafonitria Monastery, which lies just outside the village.
