Tourist resort Bochali

Bochali is a small Greek village, which is nicely maintained and visited by tourists. It is situated on a hill directly above the capital of Zakynthos, so it lies in a tourist attractive area and offers beautiful views of the whole bay with the harbour town of Zakynthos. If you hike up to the top of the hill with the remains of the Bochali fortress, you can also enjoy views of the interior of Zakynthos and the rest of the world.

Thanks to its proximity to the capital, Bochali served as the aristocratic quarter of the city during the Venetian occupation and the years that followed, and some elements of this period are still evident today. Walking through the picturesque village, you can see narrow streets surrounded by flower and green gardens, several beautiful historical monuments and religious buildings, and you can sit in one of the local tavernas and cafes.

Sights in Bochali

The small church of Agios Georgios with a separate bell tower stands on a small square and symbolizes the focal point of the village of Bochali. The church is decorated with a beautiful gilded iconostasis carved from wood, an icon of the Madonna and Child and several Byzantine icons. The church stands on a lookout point and a pleasant café with outdoor seating is located right next to it.

At the top of the hill is the fortress of Bochali, sometimes known as the Venetian Castle or Bochali Castle. The construction was completed by the Venetians in 1646, but since then the fortress has been damaged several times by the numerous earthquakes that have hit the area. Only a few perimeter walls and the remains of the entrance gate have survived. The view from the Bochali Fortress, however, is beautiful,

In Bochali you can also visit the Maritime Museum or the open-air theatre.

For whom is Bochali suitable

Most tourists visit Bochali for excursions or short visits, but if you want to spend more days here, you can also find accommodation (private accommodation, apartments). Visitors head to Bochali primarily for the spectacular views of the entire bay with the capital of Zakynthos, the port of Zakynthos and the blue distances of the Ionian Sea.

We can recommend sitting in one of the local cafes and tavernas, where you can enjoy the views with a good drink or dinner at sunset. You can also head to the ruins of Bochali Fortress, which will open up views in other directions. You can take charming photos especially in the morning at sunrise or in the evening at sunset.
