Tourist resort Exo Chora

Exo Chora is a picturesque Zakynthos village of less than 100 permanent residents, located in the western part of the Zakynthos hinterland, between the villages of Agios Leon and Maries. The village of Exo Chora is a typical example of traditional architecture and lifestyle in the Zakynthos countryside.

The village of Exo Chora is located west of Mount Vrachionas and although many tourists stop here just to take a picture of the local millennium-old olive tree, the village has much more to offer those interested.

Points of interest in Exo Chora

The village life takes place mainly in the main square in the centre of the village, which is easily recognisable by two large trees, a thousand-year-old olive tree and a hundred-year-old plane tree. The local olive tree, with its large trunk and very original shape, is said to be the oldest on the island. One of the symbols of Exo Chora is the beautiful 17th century church of St. Nikolaos.

Around the square there is a cosy tavern, several cafes and shops selling souvenirs and local products. At Exo Chora, visitors can sample a variety of local products such as different types of olive oils, homemade cheeses, wines and liqueurs. Recently, a cosmetics shop has also opened here, dominated by soaps, creams and oils made from natural products.

The village of Exo Chora also has its own 'old town', with narrow streets branching off behind the church of St Nicolas. Most of the old stone buildings collapsed in the devastating earthquake of 1953 and remain abandoned. In the olive groves around the village, we come across another curiosity in the form of 33 wells built by local families in the early 20th century to provide them with plenty of drinking water.

Walking out of the village along the dirt road towards the coast, you will come to a small Venetian tower, which is still in good condition and which offers visitors a very beautiful view of much of the west coast of the island.
