Gerakari Tourist Resort (Ano Gerakari)

In the interior of Zakynthos, three villages called Gerakari are located not far from each other. The most famous is Ano Gerakari, which is followed by Meso Gerakari and about 2 km to the south is the village of Kato Gerakari. When one says Gerakari resort, one often thinks of Ano Gerakari and its immediate surroundings, but in a broader sense it can be an area encompassing all three villages.

The village of Ano Gerakari is situated on a hill in the interior of the island of Zakynthos, about 4 to 5 km from its eastern coast. Located in a quiet part of the island away from the main holiday resorts, Ano Gerakari is similar in type to the neighbouring villages of Kypseli or Tragaki. Ano Gerakari is a very quiet resort, where tourism is rather marginal. Tourists will find a few villas and apartments for rent and a few taverns in the village.

The nearest busier resorts are the resort of Alykanas (approx. 6 km), the resort of Tsilivi (approx. 9 km) and then the capital of Zakynthos, a beautiful harbour town with historical monuments and entertainment options (approx. 11 km).

In 1953 the village suffered major damage after the Ionian earthquake. Some buildings were then repaired, but others remained abandoned and much older buildings, especially medieval ruins, can be seen in the village. The beautiful church of Agios Nikolaos (or Ano Gerakarion) also stands above the village. The path to it leads uphill through narrow streets, but the view from the top is magnificent.

For whom Gerakari is suitable

Gerakari is a very quiet to sleepy resort, which can be an ideal choice for tourists who want to use their holiday as an escape from everyday busy life and stress and to relax in the quiet and the surrounding picturesque nature. The coastline is within walking distance of the resort and the beaches in this area are calm and the sea is crystal clear, with favourites such as the narrow, sandy and pebbly Drosia beach and Ammoudi beach.

Tourist facilities in Ano Gerakari are very limited, with a few smaller accommodations and tavernas available to visitors, but for more shopping, restaurants and bars, we recommend driving to the nearby tourist resort of Alykanas or the capital city of Zante, for example.
