The popular seaside resort of Kalamaki is located in the southern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, in the bay of Laganas. The resort is located about 6 km south of the main town of Zante and its symbol has become the Caretta Caretta sea turtle.
The popular seaside resort of Kalamaki is located at the eastern end of Laganas Bay, between the bustling and popular resorts of Argassi and Laganas. Kalamaki is also not far from the capital Zante (approx. 6 km southwards) and from Zakynthos airport. The village of Kalamaki is set in a picturesque setting of surrounding cliffs, rich greenery and with Mount Skopos in the background (496 m above sea level). The surroundings of the resort are especially full of olive and pine trees.
Kalamaki is a pleasant, developing resort with excellent tourist facilities. In the centre of the resort there is a large number of taverns, cafes, restaurants and shops of all kinds. There are also several bars along the main road which provide the local nightlife. In general, however, Kalamaki is rather quiet and tourists head to the nearby resorts of Laganas, Argassi or the capital Zante for a busier nightlife. Even the proximity of the airport does not interfere with the nightlife, as night flights on Zakynthos are severely restricted or stopped altogether due to the protection of the Caretta Caretta turtles. The resort of Kalamaki has ample accommodation, with several hotels and apartments for tourists to choose from.
The Kalamaki area is part of the Zakynthos National Marine Park, an organisation that protects the Greek natural heritage and ecological balance in the southern part of Zakynthos. Adjacent to the resort is the eponymous Kalamaki Beach, a beautiful sandy beach that serves as a nesting site for the endangered Caretta Caretta (giant hawksbill turtle). Special rules are in place on the beach to protect this species and their nests in the sand. Among other things, emphasis is placed on keeping the beach clean, marking the turtle nests with signs and observing the nighttime calm.
Kalamaki beach is organised, visitors can use sun loungers and umbrellas and enjoy relaxing on this beautiful beach.
The Kalamaki area is good for hiking in the surrounding area and popular destinations include the steep gypsum cliffs known as the "High Stones". For those who like more challenging hikes and stunning views from the heights, we can also recommend a hike to the top of Mount Skopos with an altitude of 496 m. The road to the mountain starts in the nearby resort of Argassi and right on top of the mountain stands the old monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa (Our Lady of Skopiotissa), or rather its remains.
You can also learn more about the life and conservation of Caretta turtles, for example at the Zakynthos Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Centre, located near Gerakas Beach. Gerakas or Dafni Sekania beach is also in the protection zone, as it is here that baby caretta turtles are born, just like at Kalamaki beach.
The capital of Zakynthos (Zante) is only a few kilometres away and regular buses to the capital come here quite often. The capital of Zakynthos is a beautiful harbour town, very picturesque and welcoming. The cathedral of St. Dionysius or St. Mark's Square are particularly famous. In the capital you can also enjoy a wealth of shopping and entertainment opportunities.
The resort of Kalamaki is especially suitable for those who are looking for good tourist facilities in the form of tavernas, shops, car rentals and other services, but at the same time prefer quieter resorts. The resort is adjacent to a beautiful sandy beach (sand and shingle in places) with a gradual entrance to the water and pleasantly warm sea. Tourists of all ages come here, especially families with children and couples looking for peace and relaxation.
On the other hand, it is not far from here for entertainment and major shopping. The resort of Kalamaki is close to the busier resorts of Laganas (approx. 4 km) and Argassi (approx. 6 km), and you are also within minutes of the capital Zante (approx. 6 km). In addition to public bus transport, you can also use taxi or car rental services for travel.
