Tourist resort Katastari

Katastari is a traditional Greek village situated at the foot of Mount Vrachionas, about 2 km inland from the north-eastern coast of Zakynthos. The village is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards and the famous Greek tranquillity, protected by high cliffs on one side and offering stunning views of the Ionian Sea on the other.

Katastari is one of the largest villages on Zakynthos, but also the oldest. Due to fears of numerous pirate raids, the locals founded the village further from the sea shores, strategically located at the foot of the nearby mountains. The low-lying area between the village and the coast (where the popular seaside resort of Alykes is today) was mainly used for agricultural purposes. The origin of the village is indicated by its name 'Katastari', which means 'lower wheat field' in Greek. After the devastating earthquake of 1953, the new village grew a little lower, but the remains of the old buildings can still be seen today, amphitheatrically built in the hills above the present village.

The beautiful 17th-century monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos has become a symbol of the village of Katastari, which comes alive every year, especially on the feast of the Assumption of the Mother of God on 15 August. The monastery also attracts visitors with its magnificent view of the sea and the nearby resort of Alykes. You can also visit the local folklore museum with its impressive collection of silver, embroidery, ancient furniture and traditional agricultural tools.

For whom Katastari is suitable

Katastari is a relatively large and populous village on the island of Zakynthos and offers visitors good tourist facilities in the form of accommodation (villas, apartments), taverns and shops. In Katastari there is also a pharmacy, a car rental service, as well as a school and a police station. Despite this, the resort remains a quiet place with preserved traditions and customs that attract visitors.

Katastari is about 2 km (about half an hour's walk) from the coast and the seaside resort of Alykes. The village lies on the main road leading to the capital of Zakynthos (about 17 km away).
