The small mountain village of Kiliomenos (or Koiliomenos) is located in the interior of the Greek island of Zakynthos, about 18 km southwest of the main town of Zante. The village, surrounded by lush vegetation full of pine and cypress trees, is symbolized by the beautiful church of Agios Nikolaos with a detached bell tower from the late 19th century.
The inland village of Kiliomenos (or Koiliomenos) is one of the highest villages on the island of Zakynthos, located about 7 km west of the resort of Macherado and 18 km from the main town of Zante. The village is set in a picturesque surrounding countryside rich in a variety of trees, including pine and cypress trees, diverse shrubs and colourful flowers.
Kiliomenos is a traditional village that holds itself back from the bustling tourism of the seaside holiday resorts. The villagers are mainly involved in cattle breeding and agriculture and there is also a women's agricultural cooperative, Melissiotises. The cooperative also has a shop selling fresh organic products, of which we recommend trying especially the local delicious honey, traditional olive oil, several local wines, herbal products, various types of cheese, etc.
Some of the houses in the village date back to the 16th century, and the local bell tower, which towers over the village and is a very interesting historical building, is a short distance from the church itself. The church and bell tower of Agios Nikolaos was built in 1893 with distinctive Gothic elements, which is not entirely common for Greek churches. The architecture of the village of Kiliomenos is specific in that stone from nearby quarries was used extensively for the construction of the local houses.
Kiliomenos is a quiet village with a few tavernas and shops, and there are also apartments and villas for rent. For more shopping or nightlife, however, you'll need to travel to one of the island's busy tourist resorts, such as the popular seaside resorts of Laganas or Kalamaki, or to the capital, Zakynthos. The village of Kiliomenos and its surroundings are ideal for walking, with beautiful hiking trails winding through the wooded mountains. North of the village (about 4 km), near the plateau, is the monastery of Yperagathos, founded in the 17th century.
The village of Kiliomenos is also used by tourists heading to the nearby rock of Korakonissi, which offers very specific bathing and ideal conditions for snorkelling. The predominantly rocky western coast of the island is generally suitable for observing the underwater rocks and the local marine life, and we recommend visiting the nearby beaches of Porto Roxa and Porto Limnionas, for example, which offer such an unusual bathing experience.
