The traditional, picturesque village of Lithakia lies inland, in the southern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos. The village of Lithakia is located about 12 km southwest of the main town of Zante, near the popular tourist resort of Laganas.
Lithakia is one of the oldest villages on the island of Zakynthos. It is situated at the foot of low hills, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, about 3 km from the coast of Laganas Bay.
The village of Lithakia boasts several important historical and cultural monuments, the most famous of which are the church of Agios Ioannis, built in the 16th century, and the building of the Messal family. This building is a typical example of a 19th century Zakynthos mansion. It was used as a courthouse during British rule, was restored at the end of the 20th century and now serves as an environmental education centre. The village was severely damaged in the 1953 earthquake.
The village is home to the Aristeon olive pressing plant, a family business with a very long tradition and very high production standards. The olive mill also includes a museum and a small shop with local products.
Although Lithakia is close to the very busy and popular holiday resorts of Laganas and Agios Sostis, it remains a very peaceful and traditional place.
