Vassilikos Tourist Resort

The former fishing village of Vassilikos (Vassiliki) has grown over time into a popular holiday resort, which attracts its visitors mainly for its good tourist facilities, tranquility and beautiful sandy beaches. The resort of Vassilikos is situated in the southern part of the Vassilikos peninsula, in a fertile landscape of vineyards, olive groves and pine forests.

Vassilikos is one of the quieter tourist resorts, but visitors will find everything they need here. As far as local accommodation is concerned, tourists can choose from several hotels (and some are downright luxurious), guesthouses and private apartments. There are a number of tavernas, shops and car and motorbike rental services. Entertainment is mainly provided by the beach bars, which often have live music.

The coastline is busier, with a wide range of adrenaline-pumping water sports in addition to the beach bars, but inland, peace and nature gradually prevail. The evenings are more suited to gourmet experiences, and we recommend ordering some typical Greek food and a glass of good Greek wine in the local tavernas, and there are also specialised fish taverns. If you are looking for more lively nightlife, there are a few music clubs in the centre of the resort, but for a lively nightlife it is better to go to the neighbouring resort of Argassi (about 10 km) or to the capital Zante (about 15 km).

Beaches of Vassilikos

There are several beautiful beaches in the Vassilikos area, among the most famous are Agios Nikolaos, Porto Roma, Gerakas, Dafni, Banana Beach (Ionio), Porto Zoro, Porto Kaminia, Spanzia, Plaka and Vourderi. Most of them are covered with beautiful fine sand, have a gradual entrance to the sea and are also well equipped, offering various water sports and other activities.

However, the southern part of the Vassilikos peninsula is also popular with the protected Caretta turtle species, which comes here to lay its eggs in the sand on the beaches at night. As a result, most of the area around the local seashores is protected from large-scale development, and there are also strict rules against noise and lights on selected beaches. These include Gerakas and Dafni Sekania beaches.

Vassilikos and tips for trips

Baby Caretta Caretta turtles are born and lay their eggs on Gerakas or Dafni Sekania beach. Animal protectionists and various animal rescue groups are also present. The Zakynthos Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Centre is located near Gerakas beach, where you can learn about the sea turtles and see live turtles, both aquatic and terrestrial. The centre is also an interesting tourist attraction and children will be especially attracted by the giant wooden turtle right at its entrance.

The surrounding area of Vassilikos is rich in beautiful nature and vast forests, through which there are many paths for walkers and cyclists. If you also like hiking, a few kilometres to the north is the high mountain Skopos (496 m above sea level), which offers spectacular views of the surrounding area. At the very top of the mountain stands the small church of Panagia Skopiotissa.

The resort of Vassilikos is located near the capital of Zakynthos (Zante), where you can see, for example, St. Mark's Square, St. Dionysius Cathedral or the largest harbour of the island. There are regular bus connections with the capital of Zakynthos and buses to the resort are quite frequent.

Vassilikos is one of the most popular resorts on Zakynthos, well equipped for tourism (hotels, apartments, taverns, shops, etc.), surrounded by picturesque nature and quiet. There are several beautiful beaches around the resort with fine sand and beach service. We would recommend the resort of Vassilikos especially to those who are looking for comfort, peace and relaxation on a beautiful beach. Families with children will also be happy here, thanks to the fine sand and the gentle entrance to the sea.

Fun lovers and those who enjoy a lively nightlife should head especially to Laganas Bay, where the more cosmopolitan resorts of Kalamaki, Laganas or Agios Sostis are located.
