The picturesque mountain village of Volimes is located in the northern part of the inland of the Greek island of Zakynthos, about 33 km northwest of the capital Zante. The village is famous for its traditional crafts, which have been practiced by families for generations.
The inland village of Volimes is situated in the mountainous terrain of the northern part of Zakynthos, in an agricultural area dominated by olive groves, orchards and pastures for domestic animals. Volimes is a very quiet and traditional Greek village, which is known for its unique products, which are exported from Volimes not only all over the island of Zakynthos, but also to other parts of Greece. Famous are not only the local olive oils and honey, but especially the traditional, handmade products such as woven rugs, lace tablecloths, unique Greek ceramics. Traditional desserts made with honey and sweet spices or various types of cheese are also delicious.
The resort of Volimes consists of two villages - Ano Volimes (upper) and Kato Volimes (lower). However, Volimes still retains its traditional character and layout, with much of the village consisting of old stone houses and churches that survived the 1953 earthquake. Directly in the village of Volimes stands the church of St. Nikolaou, then the remains of the church of St. Spyridon in close proximity to the village. On the hill above the village, visitors can also see the old windmills.
Not far from Volimes (approx. 4 km) there is a wonderful view of the famous Navagio beach with the wreck of an old smuggler's ship. From the village it is possible to drive up the cliffs to the car park, from where it is only a few steps to the viewpoint. The view down into the bay from the almost 200m high cliffs is breathtaking. However, Navagio beach itself is only accessible from the sea.
It is a very quiet area, with much of the village of Volimes still almost untouched by tourism. However, around the main road you will find stalls selling local products such as honey, oil, spices, cafes and taverns. Most of the visitors to Volimes are tourists who just pass through, stop for a meal, buy local quality products and move on. A minimum of tourists stay longer in the village, although the first rental accommodation is already being built.
Due to its location, Volimes could be a good starting point for exploring the northern part of Zakynthos, but unfortunately the place does not have good transport links or amenities. There is no car rental service or regular bus service, and the bus only comes here on certain days.
