Xirokastello Tourist Resort

The peaceful holiday resort of Xirokastello is situated on the coast of the Vassilikos peninsula, between the two larger resorts of Argassi and Vassilikos. Xirokastello is smaller and is a typical holiday location with nice hotels, tavernas and shops. Tourists can choose from a variety of accommodation from individual apartments to guesthouses to modern hotels.

Beaches in the surroundings of Xirokastello

The main attractions of this place are beautiful nature and beautiful sandy beaches. In the immediate vicinity of Xirokastello there are two beautiful beaches - Porto Kaminia (Kaminia Beach) and Porto Zoro Beach.

However, the coastline of the peninsula is very rugged and other beautiful beaches are found especially further south, around the tourist resort of Vassilikos. This is where many say the most beautiful beaches of Zakynthos are located - Banana Beach, Agios Nikolaos, Gerakas and Dafni. The coastal area around Vassilikos is also characterised by the protective measures put in place for the nesting of kareta turtles.

Xirokastello and tips for trips

The area of the Vassilikos peninsula is characterised by picturesque nature and vast forests, which are ideal for hiking and cycling. For those who are keen on hiking in the mountains, head north to the neighbouring resort of Argassi and hike up the local mountain Skopos (496 m above sea level) for a spectacular view of the surrounding area. At the top of the mountain stands the small church of Panagia Skopiotissa.

In Argassi, visitors can also see an interesting sight, the remains of a Venetian stone bridge (1805), which stands right on the local beach. However, more than half of the original bridge has been swallowed by the sea.

The capital of Zakynthos (Zante) is only a few kilometres away and regular buses to the capital arrive here quite frequently. The capital of Zakynthos is a beautiful harbour town, very picturesque and welcoming. The cathedral of St. Dionysius or St. Mark's Square are particularly famous.

On the other hand, if you head south from Xirokastello, you can visit several beautiful and mostly sandy beaches. You can also learn more about the life and conservation of Caretta turtles, for example at the Zakynthos Sea Turtle Rescue & Information Centre, located near Gerakas Beach. It is Gerakas or Dafni Sekania beach that is in the protection zone, as this is where the baby Caretta turtles are born.

For whom is Xirokastello suitable

Xirokastello is a pleasant holiday resort with standard tourist facilities in the form of hotels, restaurants and shops. The bonus of this area is the beautiful surrounding nature and the beautiful sandy beaches. We would therefore recommend the resort of Xirokastello especially to those who are looking for comfort, peace and relaxation on a beautiful beach. Thanks to the fine sand and the gentle entrance to the sea, families with children often come here.

Tourists looking for more modern and luxurious accommodation would recommend the neighbouring resort of Vassilikos, where there are also five-star hotels. And for those who love nightclubs and lively nightlife, the neighbouring resort of Argassi is much more lively at night, or Laganas Bay with the popular resorts of Kalamaki, Laganas and Agios Sostis. The resort of Xirokastello is quiet.
