The picturesque and well-maintained Eleftherotria Monastery is characterised by its atypical architecture and bright colours of white and red. The monastery is located in the interior of Zakynthos, not far from the village of Maherado, and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside as far as Laganas Bay.
The Eleftherotria Monastery, the monastery of the Holy Mother Liberator, resembles a castle rather than a monastery, especially due to its typical battlements. At first glance, the monastery is well maintained, with red windows and arches standing out from the bright white paint. Eleftherotria is a functioning monastery and at certain times it is possible to see inside.
The Eleftherotria Monastery was probably founded in the 15th century and in the 16th century St Dionysios is said to have hidden here as Abbot of Anafonitria to save his brother's murderers from persecutors. This deed of Dionysios is considered the main reason for his sainthood. The monastery was restored in the 17th century by two decrees of the Archbishop of Venice. Today, the monastery is occupied by several nuns who take care of the interior of the monastery, decorated with beautiful frescoes and icons, as well as the garden in the courtyard.
Eleftherotria Monastery is located north of the village of Maherado, in the area of Lagopodo, about 10 km southwest of the capital of Zakynthos. From the monastery, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding olive groves, the bay of Laganas to the islet of Marathonisi.
