The old Venetian watchtower stands high on the cliffs off the western coast of Zakynthos, about 30 km west of the capital Zante. The site offers spectacular views of the wide surroundings and fabulous sunsets.
A smaller watchtower was built during the Venetian rule to watch for enemies coming from the sea. Its location was ideal for this purpose, as from here it is possible to overlook most of the western coast of Zakynthos.
The Venetian tower has been preserved in relatively good condition and its remains are freely accessible, so anyone interested can get a closer look at what such a watchtower once looked like. The added reward is an amazing view of the surrounding hills, the rocky coastline of the west side of the island and the blue distances of the Ionian Sea. You can also drive here to enjoy a beautiful sunset, away from the busy tourist resorts of Zante.
The Venetian watchtower is located less than 5 km west of the village of Exo Chora. There is also a road leading from here, first asphalted, then only paved. But with care, the tower can also be reached by car (there is a small parking area for a couple of cars under the tower). The road continues beyond the tower down to the coast, but it is an unmaintained and unpaved road. We definitely recommend leaving your vehicles at the tower.
