The Askos Stone Park Nature Reserve is located in the northern part of the inland part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, near the seaside resort and port of Agios Nikolaos. Hundreds of animals live here in their natural habitat and a large variety of trees and shrubs grow here, all suitably complemented by smaller stone and wooden buildings.
The Askos Stone Park got its name from several stone buildings located in the park. For example, there are old stone stables, cellars and rainwater collection tanks carved into the rock, which are several hundred years old. These have gradually been supplemented by stone walkways and other smaller buildings made of stone and wood, which fit in well with the natural environment.
The 124-hectare reserve is home to wild hawks, pigeons, large peacocks and many other species of birds, as well as a large number of mammals, amphibians, insects and other native animals of Zakynthos. In separate sections, visitors can observe deer, rabbits, ponies, cows and horses, sheep and goats, turtles and families of squirrels or small chinchillas. The animals move around in their natural habitat made up of a variety of plants, shrubs and smaller trees, which spread here by means of so-called self-seeding, i.e. as Mother Nature determines.
Askos Park is open to the public all year round, except on days or during periods of bad weather. Park guides are on hand to answer questions and demonstrate activities, or even, if they wish, to involve tourists directly in some activities, such as feeding the animals, picking olives or milking goats and cows. However, part of the park is closed to the public and serves as a protected forest for the free movement of animals and for growing fruit and other food for the animals.
The Askos Stone Park is located in the northern part of Zakynthos, about 2 km from the famous port of Agios Nikolaos, from which you can sail to the nearby blue caves, the Skinari lighthouse (about 6 km from the nature park in a northerly direction) or the famous Navagio beach (about 11 km in a south-westerly direction to the viewpoint over the bay). The park is usually reached via the famous resort of Volimes (approx. 7 km away).
There is a free car park close to Askos Park, and then a ticket office at the entrance to the reserve, where tourists can get a bottle of bottled water in addition to their ticket. After exploring the reserve, we also recommend a visit to the nearby restaurant in The Old Windmill Restaurant.
