Blue Caves - Zakynthos island

Blue Caves

The Blue Caves are one of the most visited places on Zakynthos and one of its most beautiful natural sights. Thanks to the bright limestone rocks and the sunlight that penetrates the clear water, the sea really shines with a beautiful blue colour. The caves are located off the north coast of the island, in the east in the area between the port of Agios Nikolaos and Cape Skinari and in the west near the village of Volimes.

The coastal caves of Zakynthos were formed by the action of the sea on the softer structure of the local limestone rocks, a process that has been going on for several thousand years. The erosion has gradually created various tunnels and caves in the cliffs, which are known as blue caves. It is the bright limestone walls and the sunlight that penetrates the crystal clear sea that gives the water its incredible colour, which includes various shades of blue.

The caves attract thousands of visitors every year. It is recommended to visit them either early in the morning or in the afternoon, when the light refracts best in the water and the water turns a beautiful turquoise and shimmers. Thanks to the refraction and reflection of the sun's rays, the light reaches below the surface and inside the caves, as if coming from somewhere in the depths of the sea.

Most of the so-called blue caves are only accessible by boat. The exception is the cave near the northern tip of Skinari, below the famous windmills, from which covered steps lead down to the shore. Most boats and barges leave from the port of Agios Nikolaos and can also be boarded under the Skinari lighthouse. There are several options - hiring your own boat, a boat taxi or a group cruise etc. Some of the boats have glass bottom boats so that during the cruise tourists can watch the amazing underwater life that can be found in the waters around Zakynthos.

If you have the chance, take a small motorboat to some of these caves. Smaller boats departing from nearby ports are also more flexible in terms of time, and the captains will also let you swim in the blue caves during your cruise. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity! You will be in for an unforgettable experience. Everything in the water turns blue, including your skin. No wonder diving is so popular in these waters.

Most organized cruises combine a trip to the blue caves with a stop at Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), which is just a short drive away.
