The Keri Caves are located at Cape Marathia (or Keri) in the southwestern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos. The rugged coastline around Cape Keri stretches for several kilometres, creating countless coves, caves, beaches and other interesting natural formations. The beautiful caves of Keri and the crystal clear sea are a paradise especially for divers and snorkelers.
The beautiful and admired Keri Caves are located at the southern tip of the Keri Peninsula, known as Cape Keri (or Cape Marathia), near the village of Marathia. The coastline here is very rocky and steep, covered with trees and dense vegetation. The caves of Keri are therefore only accessible from the sea.
The Keri caves are a popular destination for boat trips, and tourists can get here both in organized cruises with a captain and individually (on Zakynthos, you can rent a boat or a small boat without a boat license). Larger boats usually leave from the port of the capital Zante and include a longer cruise around the coast of the island, while smaller boats also regularly leave from the resorts of Laganas, Agios Sostis, Limni Keri, etc. They often go around the islets in the bay of Laganas (the "turtle" island of Marathonisi is particularly popular) and then head towards the caves of Keri. The advantage of the smaller boats and dinghies is that they can enter some of the caves directly or pass under the rock arches.
There are many caves of different sizes along the coast of the Keri peninsula, some of which can be reached by smaller boats, but others have a much smaller entrance, suitable only for swimmers. The sea around the caves is also deep (the average depth is said to be around 20 metres), although it doesn't appear so at first glance, as the water is crystal clear and the reflection of the sun's rays reaches the seabed.
Swimming directly from the boat is a great experience, where you can swim through some of the caves, touch their bright limestone walls and enjoy the beauty of the azure sea. It is recommended that you also bring your diving goggles and other snorkelling or diving equipment, as the underwater world is very beautiful in these places and it is interesting to see how the sunlight hits the rocks underwater. In some caves, the so-called "underwater window", through which the sunlight enters the caves, is also beautiful to observe. Cruises may also include a stop at one of the many small beaches around the Marathi headland.
Thanks to the rocky and rugged coastline, visitors can see many other interesting rock formations besides the caves themselves. For example, the stone arches of the Kamares, which can also be navigated under by boat, or the Myzithres rocks. Myzithres (or Mizitres) are two huge rocks close to the coast, also only accessible from the sea. In the background of the rocks are the steep slopes of the rocky coastline and the Keri Lighthouse, which offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area. There is also a small beach with very fine sand at Mizitres, but the sea is very deep at the rocks themselves.
Probably more famous than the Keri caves are the so-called blue caves, which are one of the main tourist destinations of Zakynthos. The Blue Caves are located at the northern tip of the island. They are larger and are famous for the fact that the reflection of the sun's rays on the limestone walls of the caves makes the sea really shine with a beautiful azure colour. The same can be seen at the Keri caves, which are smaller but not as crowded, and if you spend your holidays in the popular resorts of Laganas Bay, they are also closer.
The area around Cape Keri is renowned among divers and there is also a diving school in Limni Keri.
